Today, we’re talking about buttons. We’re going to cover some basics, states, use of the corner radius, etc.

We’ll cover:

  1. Standard size
  2. Placement
  3. Border radius
  4. States
  5. Hierarchy
  6. „Invisible” padding
  7. Keep it to one line
  8. Accessibility

Standard size

The standard size of a mobile button should be a minimum of 44 pt tall. As far as the width goes, I usually try to make it full-width with at least 16 pt margins on the side, giving me a 343 pt width. Font size is between 16-19 pt but I usually use 17 pt.

Placement

Whenever possible, I try to put my CTAs within my thumb’s reach, especially when they’re important navigational buttons. I put my destructive or supportive buttons out of reach, though.

Border radius

Rounded rectangles are slightly more recognizable by reducing the cognitive lead needed to distinguish the edges. They also appear more „friendly” and approachable, while sharp corners might seem more „professional” and „serious”. Use them appropriately.

States

Each button state should be easily distinguishable from others. For mobile, it doesn’t matter if you have hover or focused states but default, active and disabled should be easily recognizable.

Hierarchy

Style hierarchy is super important to communicate the importance of each action. Primary should be your most prominent CTA, secondary with medium emphasis, and tertiary should be used for action with the least importance.

„invisible” padding

Whenever you’re designing your button groups, you should always remember about the trap targets. Don’t let devs correct the designs for you. remember about the minimum accessibility requirements to create a good user experience.

Kepp it to one line

When designing your buttons you have to remember about responsiveness and how your buttons might look on the smallest devices. Don’t make your text too long if you can’t fit it into a frame. Try to keep it to one line at all times.

Accessibility rirst

You need at least 3.5-4.0 contrast ratio for long text, and 4:5 for a small text to make your digital elements readable by people with disabilities. You’re designing for a whole spectrum of users. If you can read it well, it doesn’t mean everyone can read it too.
