Why your first designs will be bad designs

When starting out, I could tell which designs were good, butl
didn’t know what I was doing wrong and couldn’t replicate them.
Now I know I didnt know anything at all but that’s fine.
It takes time to get better. Let’s break down my old design.

You don’t align your elements

I was pretty clueless when aligning my elements on a frame. I
I didn’t use grids, and all my elements were „floating” at random
placements, with different widths and side margins.

You don’t use proper spacing

My spacing was random. I didn’t use any symmetrically divisible
values (4pt grids), and it created a cluttered design that looked
uneven. This didn’t create any visual hierarchy.

You don’t look at the contrast

I didn’t check any accessibility requirements which if you did
design an app before, you know are super important. We need to
design with a large spectrum of users in mind, don’t assume
things, and make sure you meet the minimum requirements.

You’re too creative

This is every beginner designer. We get too creative, wanting to fit
every single thing on one screen. Try to strip your Ul down to the
main essentials. That’s why UX design and coming up with lA and
good wireframes first is so important. Don’t freestyle this.

You don’t use a type scale

I was always confused as to what font sizes I should use. This is
especially important as your text, next to space and color is the
most important element to establish a hierarchy. Look up type
scales on HIG for iOS and MD for Android, if you need help.

Your design is not consistent

Another beginner mistake. If you don’t have at least a basic style
a guide outlining the use of your fonts, buttons, colors, interface
elements, you’ll have a hard time creating a consistent design.
Try to utilize dynamic components and variants.

You follow bad examples

It’s hard to find good examples to replicate, and designers to
follow. Everyone can be an expert but not many are practicing
what they preach. Try to look up examples of portfolios and
industry experience of the people you ask for advice. I didn’t and
invested a lot of $$ and time without learning anything usable.
